After a domestic helper starts work in Singapore, employers must send her for regular six-monthly medical examinations (6ME) as required by MOM. Missing or late 6ME can affect Work Permit status — so it is worth putting reminders in your calendar.
What 6ME screens for
6ME typically includes checks such as pregnancy and infectious diseases (for example syphilis, HIV, and tuberculosis) as specified by MOM. The exact panel can vary — your clinic or agency will advise what is required at each visit.
Who pays
Employers are responsible for arranging and paying for 6ME unless your contract states otherwise. Budget for at least two examinations per year per helper.
Where to go
Use MOM-approved clinics or medical providers familiar with FDW examinations. Many agencies remind employers when 6ME is due, but the legal responsibility stays with the employer.
Initial medical exam vs 6ME
Do not confuse the first medical examination after arrival with ongoing 6ME. New helpers also complete onboarding medical requirements within MOM’s timelines.
Practical tip
Book appointments early and keep records of examination dates. If your helper is on home leave overseas, plan her return so 6ME remains compliant.
